Governor's "Explore Adoption Day"
Florida Governor Charlie Crist proclaimed July 22, 2009 as “Explore Adoption Day” in the state. The governor pointed out the increase in adoptions this past year. The increase includes those children who are usually harder to place – sibling groups and older children. He announced that as of July 1, 2009, Florida had 19,797 children in foster care. This is the lowest number for the state since 2003, and represents a 32% decline from 2007.
Benefits and incentives were highlighted at Explore Adoption Day. These benefits include free health care through Florida’s Medicaid program; free college tuition to a Florida state university, college or vocational school; and the possibility of a monthly stipend to families who adopt children from state care, the governor announced new incentives to adopt now. In addition there is assistance for families adopting special needs children, an adoption tax credit available to qualifying families, and benefits through many employers for families who adopt.
