Abortion Facts

Development of the infant in the womb:

  • at 3 weeks: the heart begins pumping blood through the body
  • at 4 weeks: the arms and legs begin to form
  • at 5 weeks: the ears and kidneys form
  • at 10 weeks: toenails and fingernails are formed
  • at 21 weeks: a baby is viable and has a 15% survival rate outside the womb.

The Risks

Abortion increases the chance that a woman will have an ectopic (tubal) pregnancy in the future by 30%. 5% of women suffer PID (Pelvic Inflammatory Disease) after abortion. If untreated, it can lead to infertility. Studies report that women who have an abortion increase their risk of breast cancer by 50%.

Abortion often causes women to experience psychological and emotional trauma including: acute feelings of grief, depression, anger, fear of disclosure, preoccupation with babies or getting pregnant again, nightmares, sexual dysfunction, termination of relationships, emotional coldness, increased alcohol and drug abuse, eating disorders, anxiety, flashbacks of the abortion procedures, anniversary syndrome, repeat abortions, and/or suicide.
